In my spare time...
Volunteer
I volunteer for a non-profit organization called Operation Shower. Their focus is on celebrating, honoring, and showing love to military families, and their mission is to provide amazing baby showers for military families to ease the stress of deployment.
Most of the time, my volunteering consists of designing themed stationery for the showers that happen in and around the U.S. On a couple of occasions, I have helped coordinate entire events from venue selection to catering and logistics, and other times I just help set up and shower our amazing moms.
One of my designs was selected by former First Lady, Michelle Obama, to surprise deployed military moms with a beautiful shower full of love and surprises. Such an honor that my design was selected for this event!
Ceramics
I’ve recently discovered a new passion for ceramics. I’d never done it in the past, but have found it to be not only a great outlet for my creativity but also a great stress reliever!
Glazes and certain materials can be tricky if you don’t know how to manage them, but I’ve found the trial and error in learning their idiosyncracies quite therapeutic. It’s also helped me in understanding some of the terms and ideas put forth by vendors.
Other Crafts
Knitting, sewing, crafting, and working with leather is another of my pastimes. Mine is a very creative family, and we like to entertain as well. Let’s just say there’s never a dull moment in my life!
Knowing how to do things myself helps give me a unique perspective on how things are built, how to ease the pain in production, which materials can be difficult to handle, and which alternatives may help smooth out the process.
